September 22, 2015 - Pope Francis arrived in Washington, D.C., this afternoon, and the excitement was electric.
When the pope walked off of the plane at Andrews Air Force Base, outside of Washington, D.C., President Obama, his wife and children, were there to greet him, as were Vice President Biden and numerous U.S. bishops - an unprecedented welcome for a visiting foreign dignitary. School children were also there, cheering and singing. The welcoming party had lasted only a few minutes before Francis got into his small Fiat automobile, a car he chose because of its humble presence next to the large SUVs driven by his security detail. He was driven through the city, to the Vatican Embassy, where he will live for his three days in Washington, D.C.
