As we begin these 50 days of Easter, the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns and our partners in the Inter-Religious Working Group on Extractives offer a new reflection resource for the Easter season: "Easter with an Amazonian Face: Weekly reflections on resurrection from participants of the Amazon Synod."
The seven-week guide "invites us to encounter God through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and in the beauty and suffering of the Amazon region and its people." It features the reflections of participants from the Amazon Synod, an international gathering of Catholic and Amazonian indigenous leaders in Rome last October.
It is especially important that we reflect on the themes of interconnectedness, fragility, and solidarity as we face this coronavirus pandemic together. Indigenous peoples of the Amazon are especially vulnerable to harm from the pandemic given their lack of access to health and sanitation services and susceptibility to externally-introduced diseases. Our office recently signed on to a letter calling on the international community to immediately establish measures to protect Amazonian communities during the pandemic.
This Easter, join your prayers to those of Amazonian communities.
