The situation in Honduras continues to be dire.
We need your help – the deadline to act is 5 p.m. Monday.
Berta Cáceres, internationally-respected indigenous and environmental rights advocate who was leading the fight against the construction of the Agua Zarca dam, was assassinated in Honduras on March 3.
On Thursday, more than 220 organizations, including the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns, sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry expressing our “shock and deep sorrow ” over the murder of Berta Cáceres and urging “a response from the State Department that is not ‘business as usual’ but a profound change of direction towards improving the abysmal situation of human rights in Honduras.”
Click here to ask your Congressional representative to co-sign a "Dear Colleague" letter to Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Treasure Jack Lew, asking them to:
- support an independent international investigation into the murder of Berta Cáceres;
- support protection for other Hondurans receiving threats;
- review the Unites States’ support for loans to megaprojects – like the Agua Zarca dam, which Berta was protesting at the time of her death – and other extractive projects in Honduras;
- immediately stop all assistance to Honduran security forces.
Following Senator Leahy's lead, the letter requests that the Honduran government immediately and permanently stop the Agua Zarca dam.
The deadline for representatives to co-sign the letter is 5 p.m. Monday, March 14.
