April 2016
Thank the members of Congress who signed a letter calling for Leahy Law’s application to Israel and Egypt.
Ten representatives and Senator Patrick Leahy (VT) have called for accountability for U.S. military assistance to Israel and Egypt in a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry.
The letter, led by Rep, Hank Johnson (GA), seeks answers as to how the Leahy Law is applied to the two countries and asks for an examination of specific cases of possible rights violations. The Leahy Law restricts units of foreign forces from receiving U.S. military assistance if there is credible evidence that the unit has committed a gross human rights violation and their government has failed to them accountable. The law should be applied uniformly to all countries.
The letter is signed by: Representatives Hank Johnson (GA), Andrè Carson (IN), Sam Farr (CA), Raúl Grijalva (AZ), Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC), Eddie Bernice Johnson (TX), Betty McCollum (MN), Jim McDermott (WA), James McGovern (MA) and Chellie Pingree (ME) and Senator Patrick Leahy (VT).
