In honor of Mother’s Day in the United States, a day originally intended to be called “Mother’s Peace Day” to promote global unity and peace, we ask that you join us in urging U.S. leaders to support a global ceasefire resolution at the UN Security Council.
Take action: Tell the U.S. to support the global ceasefire at the UN Security Council
On Friday, the United States blocked a vote at the UN Security Council on a resolution calling for a global ceasefire to allow communities to focus on healthcare during the coronavirus pandemic.
U.N. Secretary General António Guterres first called for a global ceasefire on March 23, and was quickly joined by Pope Francis and other leaders around the world. Several warring parties have complied.
After weeks of negotiations, the United States and Russia appeared close to supporting the resolution. Diplomats have stated that the U.S. opposition is now focused on the resolution’s call to cooperate with “specialized health agencies” within the U.N. system – a reference to the World Health Organization, which President Trump has accused of contributing to the pandemic.
The U.S. move to block the resolution came on the eve of Mother’s Day weekend. Abolitionist and social justice advocate Julia Ward Howe first suggested a Mother’s Peace Day holiday in 1870, as the United States reeled from the Civil War, as a day dedicated to the cause of peace and international cooperation, and an end to war. On this Mother’s Day, as the COVID-19 pandemic rages and armed conflicts around the world prevent urgently needed help from reaching vulnerable communities, please join us in urging the Trump Administration to support the Security Council resolution calling for a global ceasefire.
