The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) will be one of the top issues for Congress when they return to Washington, D.C. on November 14 for the final days of Obama administration.
The TPP is a massive trade deal between 12 countries on four continents covering more than 800,000 people and 40 percent of the world’s economy. We have seen trade deals like this before – NAFTA and CAFTA – and we know the poverty, pollution, and suffering they can bring to impoverished communities. Just last September, Maryknoll Sister Patricia Ryan and her indigenous Aymara colleagues from Peru came to D.C. to pursue their efforts to protect their sacred land and water from a Canadian mining company that is using a trade deal to sue Peru for the right to mine. You can read their story here.
Now that the TPP deal is signed, Congress has to approve it. This is the time to raise our voices for economic justice.

“Hello, my name is _________ and I live in [CITY, STATE]. I would like to leave a message for my member of Congress. As a person of faith, I believe that our economic system and trade policy should affirm the common good, and care especially for those living on the margins. The TPP is destructive of God’s people and God’s planet. It threatens health, jobs, food security, and the environment in all twelve TPP countries. Please oppose any vote on the TPP.”
