Join the World AIDS Day Prayer Vigil, Dec. 1
Sign up below for a one-hour time slot during the 24-hour vigil for World AIDS Day.
World AIDS Day is held on December 1 each year. It is an opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have died, and celebrate victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention service. The theme for this year's World AIDS Day is "Take the rights path." As UNAIDS explains, "With human rights at the center, with communities in the lead, the world can end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030."
Maryknoll missioners around the world participate in HIV AIDS ministry.
- Read Maryknoll Sister Connie Krautkremer's recent scripture reflection on her ministry to those with HIV AIDS in Tanzania.
- Pray with and share the Maryknoll AIDS Task Force prayer.
- Sign up for an hour-long slot for the 24-hour prayer vigil for those living with HIV and AIDS and for those whose lives were cut short due to HIV or AIDS. The vigil will begin at 12am ET on Sunday, December 1.

I have been a nurse since 1963, working 17 years in the Emergency Room. Needless to say I was taking care of patients with AIDS a while before we even had an idea of what it was, how it was spread, etc. Yes, it was scary.
Many people were afraid that I would bring an illness to them, so I had to often just be a bit quiet about the whole medical condition. Even some staff were afraid. It was so sad.
I made good friends with the ones who had the symptoms and word spread that they should ask for Patricia to take care of them, and they would not mind waiting.
It was a special time for sure.
Some years later I had moved and actually worked on a unit at a hospital were we called it ISU: the Immuno-suppressed unit. We knew what AIDS was and in those eight bed unit, families, friends, etc, got to share fears etc with each other. So it was a "good way of helping and teaching.
I felt honored that they trusted me and could ask me anything. And they knew I cared and prayed for them...I am blessed.

I pray for all those who have been directly affected by HIV and AIDS, especially those who have passed on, those who have lost loved ones, and those currently living with HIV. May our prayers and activism lead to increased research, increased access to healthcare, an end to stigmas and increased compassion and care toward those living with HIV or AIDS, and a deeper appreciation for all who have helped achieve the victories won. |
