Happy World Environment Day!
Learn more about how to faithfully respond to the call to restore Earth’s ecosystems by joining the Catholic Climate Covenant tomorrow, June 6 at 1pm ET for a webinar titled “Celebrate World Environment Day and Ecosystem Restoration: An Inner and Outer Journey in UN Frameworks.”
Today, June 5 is World Environment Day, first celebrated by the UN over fifty years ago. This year’s theme focuses on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”
Some 3.2 billion people—40 percent of the world’s population—are impacted by land degradation caused by extreme weather and unsustainable production and consumption practices. Indigenous communities, smallholder farmers, women and youth are disproportionately impacted. But the consequences of land degradation will eventually reach everyone’s kitchen tables, with food prices expected to jump 30 percent over the next decade if degradation continues.
